Meet the People Behind the Piece
At English Ladies Co, every figurine tells a story, but just as important are the remarkable people who bring each creation to life. Behind our fine bone china figurines are masters of British ceramics whose artistry continues the proud heritage of Staffordshire pottery.
A Legacy of British Ceramic Artistry
Our Master Painter, Dan Smith, began his extraordinary journey with an apprenticeship at Royal Doulton straight from school. It was there that he developed and refined the exceptional hand-painting techniques that would define his career.
His talent was quickly recognised, setting him on a path to becoming one of the most respected artists in the world of collectible figurines. Through decades of dedication, Dan has continued to uphold the highest standards of traditional ceramic craftsmanship.
Dan Smith & the Art of Hand Painting
During his time at Royal Doulton, Dan worked on some of the most iconic and highly sought-after figurines, including Top o’ the Hill and Autumn Breezes. He also contributed to prestigious commemorative pieces, including the elegant portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created to mark the twentieth anniversary of her coronation.
Designed by the renowned sculptor Peggy Davies, this remarkable figurine reflects the level of artistry and trust Dan has earned throughout his career. His expertise later led him to Royal Doulton’s exclusive Prestige Department, where he painted some of their most luxurious and intricate figures, including Princess Badoura and the beloved Jack Point.
A True Master of the Craft
Dan’s work continues to set the standard for hand-painted figurines in the United Kingdom, celebrating beauty, precision, and the enduring traditions of British ceramics.
Valerie Annand & Creative Innovation
Continuing this legacy of excellence, English Ladies Co is proud to collaborate with world-renowned sculptor Valerie Annand. Known for transforming figurine design at Royal Doulton, Valerie brought fresh creativity and innovation to the industry, making her a celebrated name among collectors of fine bone china figurines.
Her artistic vision, combined with Dan’s extraordinary painting expertise, allows English Ladies Co to create pieces that feel both timeless and distinctive. Together, they bring a rare level of authenticity and elegance to every design.
A Collaboration to Treasure
Today, Dan and Valerie combine their extraordinary talents to create exclusive designs for English Ladies Co. Their recent collaboration, Congratulations Gold, is a stunning example of British craftsmanship at its finest.
With intricate detailing and a delicate palette of gold, cream, and pearl tones, this handcrafted figurine captures elegance and artistry in every detail. It reflects the passion, experience, and creative excellence that define the English Ladies collection.
